My work is about how we feel inside.

We are all subject to a thousand influences from the “outside world” which impact on our feelings. These may be to do with money, work, family, or relationships. We are often so wrapped up in our thoughts and what is going round and round in our heads and trying to cope that we are not in tune with how we feel at all.

My work reflects this by putting a barrier between the person looking at it and the “painting”. The barrier may be bars or numbers, whatever, what it does is to put a distance between the object or scene and the people looking in at it - allowing some time to discover whether you feel you are looking in at something or out from somewhere.

So when people see my pieces they tend to interpret them differently depending on how they feel at the time – “gloomy”, ”politically charged”, “energetic” - all sorts of comments. What is fun for me is that “what is it?” is never asked – people find their own connection with what they are looking at. That is exciting because it means the work has its own life in other people’s minds – which means that I’m doing my job.

I use many different artistic media from charcoal on paper and oil paint on canvas to experimental photographic techniques and digital technology. I make drawings, paintings, prints, photographic prints and interactive computer based pieces.

I am a founder member of Asylum Studios an artists’ studio group. Our objective is to make Asylum Studios into the focal point for creativity and diversity for the visual arts in Suffolk Coastal District. A place which encourages and helps artists to work to their full potential and gives visitors an exciting insight into contemporary visual arts.
