Asylum Studios was set up in 2000 as a co-operative to provide affordable studio spaces to locally based professional artists and to create a sustainable focus for professional arts activity in this area. Asylum Studios as an organisation exists to encourage creativity in diverse arts activities.

Having moved into the old "Special Investigations" building on Bentwaters we are now developing it as viable artists’ studios with low rents, on site darkroom and general workshop facilities. We hold exhibitions, seminars and residencies each year.

The co-op is artist centred and inclusive of non-members – a flexi space is available for short term rent, seminars will include artists from outside the membership as both audience and exhibitors. As resources permit we propose to develop an accessible and affordable resource for local artists with workshops focussed on both the professional development of artists and giving access to the arts and art techniques to a broader community.

Membership is open - artists are selected on quality of work and commitment to the shared aims of the co-op. We are a group of artists making wide range of work both challenging and contemporary and with the energy to pursue our goals. This has provoked substantial interest both from the local press and the local community.
